GST: what you collect and what you send

Once you're registered, one eleventh of a GST-inclusive price belongs to the ATO. You take off the GST in your business expenses and send the rest. You must register at $75,000 of GST turnover, and the ATO's registering for GST page (opens in a new tab) has the steps. The GST calculator works out a single price.

The small business income tax offset

If your turnover is under $5 million, you get 16% off the tax on your business income, up to $1,000 a year. The ATO small business offset page (opens in a new tab) has the formula. It's non-refundable and doesn't cut the Medicare levy. With a job as well, only the business's share of your income counts.

PAYG instalments

The ATO usually starts instalments once you have $4,000 of business or investment income, $1,000 of tax on your last assessment and $500 of estimated tax. It sets your amount from your last return, so ours is only a rough quarter of the tax the business adds. The ATO's PAYG instalments page (opens in a new tab) has the rules.

Your income tax follows the income tax calculator, and a study loan follows the HECS repayment calculator.

Does a sole trader pay super on their own income?

Super guarantee doesn't cover you. You can pay your own, and a contribution you claim as a deduction needs a notice of intent that your fund acknowledges.

What if I also have a salary?

Add it here with the tax already withheld. Your business income then stacks on top of the salary, so it's taxed at your higher rates.

Why isn't the set-aside figure the same as my tax rate?

It's a share of the money you receive, and that includes GST and your expenses. A business with few expenses sets aside more.
