Take-home pay by pay cycle

The same salary gives the same yearly tax whatever the pay cycle. What changes is how much your employer withholds each payday, because Schedule 1 converts every pay to a weekly figure, rounds it, then converts back.

Income tax on $70,000 is $11,520 and the Medicare levy is $1,400, a total of $12,920. That's an average rate of 18.46%. Each extra dollar earned above this point loses 32 cents to tax and Medicare.

Converting hourly, part-time and year-to-date pay

An hourly rate becomes an annual salary by multiplying by weekly hours, then by 52. Full-time is usually 38 ordinary hours, so $40 an hour equals $79,040 a year.

The annual salary calculator also works backwards, from salary to hourly rate. For quick reference, the hourly to salary chart lists annual and after-tax figures for common rates.

Part-time and year-to-date pay

Part-time pay is a share of a full-time salary. Someone working 22.8 hours in a 38-hour role is paid 60% of the full-time figure. The pro rata salary calculator also handles a role that starts partway through the financial year.

Your payslip shows year-to-date gross and tax. Projecting those figures to 30 June with the YTD calculator gives an early estimate of your refund or shortfall.

When your pay changes: rises, bonuses, overtime and weekend rates

A raise is taxed only at your marginal rate. The pay rise calculator compares old and new take-home per week, month and year.

Bonuses and back pay have their own withholding rules. Under the ATO's Schedule 5, Method A spreads the payment across the year's pay periods. Method B covers back pay for specific pay periods and payments not tied to one period.

The bonus tax calculator compares what's withheld with what you'll owe.

Overtime and penalty rates are paid at a multiple of your base rate under your modern award or agreement. The overtime calculator and penalty rates calculator apply time and a half, double time and weekend loadings.

What sits between gross and net pay

Five items usually separate the salary in your contract from the amount on your payslip.

  • Income tax at resident rates, reduced by the low income tax offset of up to $700 below $66,667.
  • The Medicare levy of 2%, plus the Medicare levy surcharge of 1% to 1.5% for singles above $105,000 without private hospital cover.
  • Compulsory HELP repayments once repayment income passes $69,528.
  • Pre-tax deductions such as salary sacrifice, which lower taxable income.
  • Post-tax deductions such as union fees or child support, which don't.

Super is different. Employers pay 12% of qualifying earnings into your fund on top of your salary, within 7 business days of payday under Payday Super. A salary package that "includes super" holds the 12% inside the headline number instead.

The average wage as a benchmark

Full-time adults earned $2,083.70 a week in ordinary time earnings in May 2026, according to ABS Average Weekly Earnings (opens in a new tab). That's $108,352 a year, or about $54.83 an hour over 38 hours.

The typical worker earns less, as the median figures for August 2025 show. The average wage Australia per hour figures break this down by sex and show the after-tax result.

Is a salary package the same as a base salary?

No. A package, or total remuneration, usually includes the 12% super guarantee. A $70,000 package that includes super has a base salary of $62,500 and super of $7,500. A $70,000 base salary has $8,400 of super paid on top. Ask your employer which one an offer states.

Is super paid on top of my salary?

Usually yes. Unless your contract says the figure includes super, your employer pays 12% of qualifying earnings on top. On a $70,000 salary that's $8,400 a year. From 1 July 2026 it must reach your fund within 7 business days of each payday.

Why do salary converters assume a 38-hour week?

Because the national minimum weekly wage of $1,004.90 is set for a 38-hour full-time week. That week over 52 weeks is 1,976 hours. If your award or contract sets 40 hours, use 40, and $40 an hour becomes $83,200 a year.

Does a salary converter show the same take-home as my payslip?

Close, but not to the cent. A $70,000 salary gives $1,097.69 a week from annual tax ÷ 52, against $1,097.15 on a weekly payslip. Schedule 1 rounds withholding to whole dollars, and your tax return settles the difference.
