Fortnightly tax calculator (fortnightly pay) 2026-27
This fortnightly tax calculator works out the PAYG tax withheld from fortnightly pay, your take-home amount and the yearly equivalent. It follows the ATO's 2026-27 Schedule 1 fortnightly method (opens in a new tab). On $2,900 a fortnight, $566 is withheld.
The link carries the numbers you entered, so anyone who opens it sees the same result.

Fortnightly pay to an annual salary (×26)
Multiply fortnightly pay by 26 for the yearly figure. $2,900 a fortnight is $75,400 a year before tax.
Income tax on $75,400 is $13,140 and the Medicare levy is $1,508, so the year's tax is $14,648, or $563.38 a fortnight. Your employer withholds $566, or $14,716 over 26 pays, which leaves you $68 ahead before deductions. The $566 comes from the weekly formula, as the ATO method sets out.
- 1
Halve the fortnight
Half of $2,900 is $1,450.
- 2
Adjust the cents
Drop the cents and add 99 cents to get $1,450.99.
- 3
Apply the weekly formula
0.3200 × $1,450.99 − $181.7319 = $282.58.
- 4
Round, then double
That rounds to $283 and doubles to $566. The fortnightly tax table shows the result at every income level.
Going the other way, divide a salary by 26. $75,400 ÷ 26 is $2,900. Dividing by 24, as if there were two pays a month, gives $3,141.67 and overstates each pay by $241.67.
Casual workers paid fortnightly use the same steps. Their 25% casual loading is already inside the gross figure, so it's taxed like any other pay.
Why a fortnight isn't half a month
Twenty-six fortnights cover 364 days. Two fortnightly pays of $2,900 make $5,800, yet the monthly equivalent of $75,400 is $6,283.33 ($2,900 × 26 ÷ 12). The same applies to take-home: $2,334 a fortnight is about $5,057 a month, not $4,668.
Hourly rate, wage benchmarks and a second job
Working back to an hourly rate, $2,900 for a standard 76-hour fortnight is $38.16 an hour. The same pay sits just above the $2,850 a fortnight implied by the median weekly earnings of all employees ($1,425 in August 2025, ABS).
For comparison, a full-time worker on the national minimum wage earns $2,009.80 a fortnight. Schedule 1 withholds $278 from that, leaving $1,731.80.
If you don't claim the tax-free threshold, as with a second job, scale 1 withholds $786 from the same $2,900. That's $220 more a fortnight.
Fortnightly take-home at common salaries
| Annual salary | Fortnightly gross | PAYG withheld | Take-home (payslip) | Take-home (actual tax ÷ 26) | HELP component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $1,923.08 | $250 | $1,673.08 | $1,681.92 | $0 |
| $60,000 | $2,307.69 | $374 | $1,933.69 | $1,937.69 | $0 |
| $70,000 | $2,692.31 | $498 | $2,194.31 | $2,195.38 | $2 |
| $80,000 | $3,076.92 | $622 | $2,454.92 | $2,456.92 | $60 |
| $90,000 | $3,461.54 | $744 | $2,717.54 | $2,718.46 | $118 |
| $100,000 | $3,846.15 | $868 | $2,978.15 | $2,980.00 | $176 |
| $120,000 | $4,615.38 | $1,114 | $3,501.38 | $3,503.08 | $292 |
| $150,000 | $5,769.23 | $1,524 | $4,245.23 | $4,247.31 | $480 |
At every salary in the table, the payslip column is a few dollars below the annual-tax column. The 99 cents added to earnings nudges withholding up, so at these salaries a little comes back after lodging.
Schedule 1 doesn't include the Medicare levy surcharge. A single on $110,000 a year ($4,230.77 a fortnight) with no private hospital cover owes 1% of income, or $1,100. That's about $42.31 a fortnight that payroll doesn't withhold unless you ask for an extra amount.
The HELP column and the wider gap at $50,000
The HELP column starts at $70,000 with a $2 component. Schedule 8 begins once half the fortnight reaches $1,337, which is $2,674 a fortnight.
At $50,000 the gap is larger: $8.84 a fortnight, or $229.84 over the year. At that income the low income tax offset is still $250, close to the size of that gap.
Budgeting when a year has 27 paydays
A 365-day year holds 26 fortnights plus one day, and a leap year plus two. The spare days add up, so roughly every 11 years (14 ÷ 1.25) a 27th payday lands in the same financial year.
Two things can happen, depending on how you're paid. If you're paid for the hours you work, the 27th pay is extra income. If your employer spreads a fixed salary over 27 pays, each pay shrinks: $75,400 ÷ 27 is $2,792.59, with $530 withheld each time.

Either way, a 27-pay year tends to leave a bill at tax time. You can ask your employer to withhold an extra amount each fortnight to cover it. If you budget per pay, setting aside part of the 27th pay covers the shortfall.
Super isn't affected the same way. Under Payday Super your employer pays 12% of qualifying earnings within 7 business days of each payday, so a 27th pay simply brings a 27th contribution.
Which years have 27 paydays
The 2026-27 financial year is one of them for some workers. A fortnightly payday that fell on Wednesday 1 July 2026 repeats 26 more times, with the last on Wednesday 30 June 2027.
In 2027-28, which includes 29 February 2028, paydays starting on Thursday 1 July or Friday 2 July 2027 also give 27 pays.
When the fortnightly figure will differ
The result assumes one job, resident tax rates and the tax-free threshold claimed. It won't match your final tax in these cases.
- You have deductions, a second income or investment income.
- You claim the $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses, which is available from 2026-27.
- Your fortnightly pay includes a bonus or back pay. Employers withhold from those under Schedule 5.
- You're single, earn over $105,000 and have no private hospital cover. The Medicare levy surcharge then applies at tax time.
- You earn under about $35,000, where the Medicare levy is reduced. That reduction starts at $28,011, the latest announced (2025-26) threshold, as 2026-27 thresholds are not yet set.
- Your hours change from one fortnight to the next. Multiplying a single pay by 26 then misstates the year.

How many pay fortnights are in a year?
Usually 26. Twenty-six fortnights cover 364 days, so the leftover day or two build up until a financial year holds 27 paydays, about every 11 years. In that year, someone on $2,900 a fortnight earns $78,300 and may face a $294 shortfall at tax time.
How do I calculate tax on fortnightly income?
Halve the fortnightly amount, drop the cents and add 99 cents. Apply the ATO weekly formula, round to the dollar, then double. On $2,900 that gives $566 withheld for 2026-27. Actual tax over the year is $563.38 a fortnight, so a little comes back.
How much HELP is taken from fortnightly pay?
On $2,900 a fortnight, Schedule 8 adds $34 to the tax withheld. That's $884 over 26 pays, close to the $880.80 compulsory repayment on $75,400. Nothing is withheld for HELP until weekly earnings reach $1,337, which matches the $69,528 repayment threshold.
How do I compare monthly rent with fortnightly pay?
Multiply the monthly rent by 12 and divide by 26. Rent of $2,600 a month is $1,200 a fortnight, not $1,300. Against take-home of $2,334 on $2,900 gross, that rent uses 51.4% of each pay.
What do I report to Centrelink from fortnightly pay?
Report your gross pay before tax, not the take-home amount. On $2,900 that means $2,900, not $2,334. Your Centrelink reporting fortnight may not line up with your pay fortnight, so check the dates Services Australia asks for.
