Weekly pay to an annual salary
Multiply weekly pay by 52 for an annual salary. $1,400 a week is $72,800 a year before tax.
On $72,800, income tax is $12,360 and the Medicare levy is $1,456, a total of $13,816. The low income tax offset is nil at this income. Spread over 52 weeks, that's $265.69 a week.
Your employer withholds $267 a week, or $13,884 over 52 weeks, so you're $68 ahead at tax time, before any deductions. The extra comes from rounding in the formula.
- 1
Tidy the earnings
Schedule 1 ignores the cents in weekly earnings and adds 99 cents, so $1,400 becomes $1,400.99.
- 2
Apply the formula
0.3200 × $1,400.99 − $181.7319 = $266.58. The coefficients a and b change at each weekly earnings band.
- 3
Round to a whole dollar
$266.58 rounds to $267. The weekly tax table lists the result for every dollar amount.
The tax-free threshold claim on your TFN declaration decides the scale, and a foreign resident has a scale of their own.
Withheld from $1,400 a week
Scale 2
- Who it covers
- Tax-free threshold claimed
- Withheld
- $267
Scale 1
- Who it covers
- Threshold not claimed, the usual scale for a second job
- Withheld

Scale 3
- Who it covers
- Foreign resident, at 30% from the first dollar
- Withheld
- $420
Scale 1 withholds $110 more each week than scale 2. The scale 3 amount equals one week of foreign resident tax on $72,800, because foreign residents get no tax-free threshold and pay no Medicare levy.
Against the national benchmarks, $1,400 sits between the minimum wage and the median.

Super is paid separately. Under Payday Super, your employer must pay 12% of qualifying earnings into your fund within 7 business days of each payday. On $1,400 that's $168 a week.
Years with 53 weekly paydays
A year has 52 weeks and one or two days, so every five or six years a weekly-paid worker gets 53 paydays in one financial year. At $1,400 a week that's $74,200 of income.
Withholding over 53 pays comes to $14,151, while actual tax and Medicare on $74,200 is $14,264. The worker is $113 short at tax time unless they ask for extra to be withheld.

| $2,500 | $619 | $1,881 | $794 | $130,000 |
The HELP column adds the Schedule 8 study loan component. Nothing extra is withheld until weekly earnings reach $1,337, which lines up with the $69,528 repayment threshold. At $1,400 a week the extra is $10, and at $2,500 it's $175.
Between $1,282 and $2,596 a week, each extra dollar has 32 cents withheld. That matches the 30% tax rate plus the 2% Medicare levy on the same income.
Overtime or penalty-rate weeks: why the tax jumps
Withholding treats every week as if you earned that amount all year. A bigger week therefore looks like a bigger salary, and more tax comes out.
Take a worker on $45 an hour. One week they add 6 hours of overtime at time and a half, which is $67.50 an hour or $405 extra.
| Week | Gross | PAYG withheld | Share withheld |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal week, 38 hours | $1,710 | $366 | 21.40% |
| Overtime week, 38 + 6 hours | $2,115 | $495 | 23.40% |
| Difference | $405 | $129 | 31.9% of the overtime |
On the tax return, that one overtime week adds $129.60 to the year's tax on a $88,920 base, so the $129 withheld is almost exactly right. The average rate on the payslip rose, but the overtime itself was taxed at the same 32 cents as the rest of this worker's income above $66,667.
The overtime calculator and penalty rates calculator work out the gross amount for a given award multiplier.
When a single week passes $2,596
From there Schedule 1 withholds 39 cents per dollar, matching a $135,000 salary. If the same worker did 20 hours of overtime ($1,350), $464 extra would be withheld against $432 of extra annual tax. The $32 difference comes back at tax time.
Weekend and night penalty rates behave the same way, because withholding sees only the week's total.
Where the weekly estimate can differ
The calculator assumes a resident with one job and the tax-free threshold claimed. Your actual weekly or yearly figure will differ in these situations:
- You have a second job and also claim the tax-free threshold there, so scale 2 applies twice.
- A bonus, commission or back pay is included in the week. Employers use Schedule 5 for those, not the normal weekly formula.
- Your employer also deducts salary sacrifice, union fees or child support.
- Your hours vary. Multiplying one week by 52 overstates the year after a big week and understates it after a short one, so use an average week for the annual figure.
- You claim deductions at tax time, including the $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses that applies from 2026-27.
- You earn over $105,000 a year as a single without private hospital cover, so the Medicare levy surcharge applies at tax time.

How much tax will I pay this week?
On $1,400 your employer withholds $267 in 2026-27, leaving $1,133. The amount depends on that week's gross pay only. If you also work a second job, only one employer should apply the tax-free threshold, or too little tax is withheld across both.
How much tax do you pay on $1,000 per week?
$138 is withheld from $1,000 a week, leaving $862, if you claim the tax-free threshold. Over a full year, $52,000 attracts $6,940 of tax and Medicare after a $220 low income tax offset. That's $133.46 a week, so about $4.54 a week comes back at tax time.
How is tax calculated on weekly pay?
Your employer applies the ATO formula y = a × x − b. Here x is weekly earnings with cents dropped and 99 cents added, and a and b come from Schedule 1. On $1,400 the result is $266.58, rounded to $267. Annual leave taken in a normal week is added to that week's pay. Leave paid in advance is averaged over the weeks of leave before the formula is applied.
How do I work out weekly income from an annual salary?
Divide the annual salary by 52. A $72,800 salary is $1,400 a week before tax and $1,133 after PAYG withholding. For take-home over the year, use actual tax instead: $72,800 less $13,816 of tax and Medicare is $58,984, or $1,134.31 a week.
How do I work out my weekly wage?
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours worked that week, then add any overtime or penalty pay. At $45 an hour for 38 hours, the weekly wage is $1,710. Casual rates already include the 25% loading, so a $45 casual rate is $36 base plus $9 loading.
